How to Get a Cat Used to a Self-Cleaning Litter Box

Self-cleaning boxes are convenient, but some cats are wary of the movement and new shape at first. With a gradual approach, most accept it within days to a few weeks. Here's a low-stress way to do it.

First, leave it off as 'just a box'

Don't turn on auto mode right away. Place it powered off, as an ordinary box. Once your cat uses it normally and is used to the shape and smell, then enable auto cleaning.

Keep the same litter and location

Move a little of the familiar litter over and keep the same location — don't change too much at once. Supported litter types (clumping, tofu, etc.) vary by model, so check compatibility first.

Choose a less-intimidating design

Open-top designs feel less enclosed and are often easier for timid cats to enter. A safety sensor pauses the mechanism while a cat is inside. Design-level 'approachability' strongly affects that first impression.
