Clumping, odor control, low dust — the right litter, even for auto boxes.
US litter is sold by weight, typically in 5–40 lb bags; UK, European and Japanese bags are usually marked in litres. That matters because density differs: clumping clay runs about 0.95 kg per litre and tofu litter about 0.60 kg, so a 12 kg clay bag and a 6-litre tofu bag cannot be compared by weight. Our ranking converts everything to a price per litre.
What we call “bentonite” is sold in the US as clumping clay; silica gel is “crystal” litter; tofu litter is often shelved as plant-based, alongside corn and wheat. Paper litter is common in Japan and uncommon in the US and UK. Shop by type rather than by the Japanese brand name — the “Litter type” row on each product page gives it.
Automatic litter boxes almost always assume clumping litter. Crystal, pellets and non-clumping litter jam the drum or fall through the sieve; plant-based litter clumps but is lighter, and only works reliably on machines that list it in the specification. Check the two against each other before you buy a large bag.
Used litter goes in general waste in both the US and UK. Do not flush it, even litter sold as “flushable” — water companies advise against it, and California requires such packaging to carry a warning about flushing. A lighter litter is easier to carry home but fills the bin faster, so weigh both against your collection day.
