Tracked litter is a daily cleaning cost. The cause is not just your cat's habits — grain size and box shape matter a great deal. Here is what you can change.
Fine grains lodge between the toe pads and get carried out. Larger formats such as wood pellets or crystal litter track far less. Some cats dislike coarse grain, though, so watch how they dig before committing.
High-sided boxes and top-entry designs cut tracking substantially. A tall structure is hard work for kittens and seniors, though, so match it to your cat's age.
For a litter mat, what matters is whether the texture actually knocks grains off the paws. A flat cloth does little. Ease of cleaning counts too — a mat left full of litter stops working.
It depends on the entry design. Most automatic boxes use fine clumping litter, which is inherently prone to tracking, so mats and placement do the work.
A little, but too shallow a bed stops the cat covering waste and can make it avoid the box. Aim for around five centimetres.
