Long hours alone bring inactivity and boredom. Automatic toys genuinely help, but expecting too much ends in "they lost interest in a day". Here is what they can and cannot do.
Toys with unpredictable movement that the cat can trigger itself provide real stimulation while you are out. Ball and laser types keep their appeal better when set to run briefly at set times. Running constantly devalues the stimulus.
Toys are not the only answer. A tower, a window perch or a cardboard box reduces boredom at almost no cost. A view outside in particular can occupy a cat for hours.
Puzzle feeders and roll-to-dispense toys engage foraging behaviour, delivering both activity and satisfaction. If you pair one with an automatic feeder, remember to subtract those treats from the daily calorie total.
They provide exercise, but never catching anything leaves frustration. End the session on a physical toy or treat so the hunt concludes in a catch. Never shine it into the eyes.
Toys and feeders cannot cover this. For multi-day absences you need a person visiting to care for the cat. A camera lets you check in; it does not provide care.
