The prices and experience on this site come from Japan, where tap water is very soft — the median is about 46 mg/L. Hardness in the US and UK varies enormously by area, and your water utility publishes the figure for your address (UK companies list it by postcode). The harder the water, the faster a fountain scales up.
Limescale forms in any fountain and gives biofilm something to cling to. Stainless and ceramic bowls show deposits sooner and clean up properly with citric acid or diluted vinegar; plastic grooves hold more residue. The “Material” row shows what the bowl is made of, and “Dishwasher-safe” which parts can go in the machine.
The filters combine activated carbon with ion-exchange resin, which captures calcium and magnesium. The replacement interval a maker quotes — usually two to four weeks — assumes average water; in a hard-water area the resin is spent earlier. Check before buying that replacement filters for that model are stocked locally.
Fountains run from a 5 V USB cable that works with any adapter, though the adapter itself is often not included. Models with a cordless pump (the “Wireless pump” row) also run on a battery, so you can put them anywhere — in exchange for recharging them regularly.
